Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Counselling

In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder counselling, we will work to normalize your thoughts, redefine and normalize situations and/or places, dispute irrational thoughts and unhelpful thinking styles, develop alternative perspectives, and form coping techniques to help deal with daily life and common stressors. Psychodynamic therapy is an important part of our initial trauma work together, where we develop an understanding of some unconscious conflicts of which you may be unaware, and how they might be impacting you currently. We also work with you to learn grounding techniques, mindfulness, and stabilization work to help you reach a therapeutic level and build rapport. Depending on the client’s situation, exposure therapy can be extremely helpful in working with victims of trauma. Talking about your experience and/or revisiting situations/places can help to reduce avoidance of thoughts, places, or situations related to the trauma.

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) refers to the negative mental and physical effects following exposure to major trauma, such as the death or threat of death, serious injury, physical abuse, or sexual abuse. Trauma refers to a frightening, overwhelming event that causes significant distress. This may involve: crime, natural disasters, accidents, war or conflict, or other perceived threats – to yourself or to someone close to you.

Common symptoms of PTSD:

– Re-experiencing the trauma: vivid nightmares, flashbacks, or continual thoughts about the event

– Avoid situations or places that remind you of or are similar to the situation/place

– Often feel nervous or ‘on edge’

– Started very easily

– Difficulty concentrating or focusing

– Irritable

– Difficulty sleeping

– Feel numb (from emotions) or detached

– Turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with or avoid negative thoughts or feelings

Your first session involves initial assessment of your well being and a thorough intake of your personal history and background. Subsequent therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length, and are unique to each individual treatment plan.
