Anxiety Counselling Mississauga

Our anxiety counselling service in Mississauga aims to achieve a better understanding excessive worries you may have. It is important that, when working with a psychotherapist, the goal is to identify triggers and associations of this anxious feeling. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is one of the best treatments for anxiety. This involves examining thoughts and behaviours, identifying negative patterns in thoughts and behaviours, and forming new and more positive thoughts and behaviours to replace old, less effective ones. Physical stress associated with anxiety decreases with these efforts to change as well.

Some anxiety symptoms include:

avoidance of social situations, or the inability to be happy in social situations

irrational fears that take over your mind, and prevent you from enjoying the moment

panic attacks, consisting of mainly of shortness of breath or heart racing

constant fear of the worst, or constant expectation of the worst possible outcome

In anxiety counselling, we will work to identify thoughts and behaviours that trigger anxiety, develop more positive, effective ways to approach people, situations, and ways of thinking about oneself. In addition, we will form relaxation techniques to help you cope with common stressors.

Your first session involves initial assessment of your well being and a thorough intake of your personal history and background. Subsequent therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length, and are unique to each individual treatment plan.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is an overwhelming sense of worry, associated with various physical symptoms, such as: heart racing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, tense muscles in the body and face, and shaky hands or knees. Anxiety involves a ‘fear of the worst’ or ‘expectation of experiencing negative events and negative feedback’.

Anxiety can be present in a variety of forms and diagnoses, some of the most common being: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety, social phobias, and specific phobias.

Anxiety can be extremely overwhelming. It is important to develop ways to proactively prevent anxious feelings and thoughts, rather than react when it is too late. This takes one’s conscious effort to focus on the positive and helpful strategies that you can develop with a psychotherapist.
