Frequently asked questions
At Balanced Mind and Wellness, we often receive questions about the difference between in-person and virtual therapy sessions. We have take the time to outline some key differences and benefits we have observed and that clients have mentioned to us about their experiences.
While you may believe one option is better for you, we also offer the option to select a combination of the two, where you may switch between virtual and in-person, as you see fit. Our goal is to make this as simple and convenient as it can be for you to prioritize yourself and your needs.
In-Person Therapy
In-Person Connection
Some believe that the physical presence of a therapist can create a sense of safety and foster a more intimate relationship.
Privacy
Having a space that feels confidential and private to speak, and is separate from others at home or work might be an important consideration for some.
Nonverbal Communication
Therapists can observe more body language, gaining further valuable insights into a client’s emotions.
Structured Environment
A dedicated space and time for therapy can help to prioritize therapy, creating a sense of structure and routine.
Fewer Distractions
The physical environment can minimize distractions, being in a different environment, in comparison to virtual appointments.
Virtual Therapy
Convenience and Accessibility
Virtual therapy allows clients to access care from any space with an internet connection, making it easier for those with limited time, as well as those with mobility issues.
Flexibility
Clients can schedule sessions at times that work best for their schedule, and virtual therapy can be helpful for those who are traveling or relocating.
Reduced Costs
Online therapy can eliminate transportation costs and time spent traveling to sessions.
Comfort
Some clients may feel more comfortable disclosing sensitive information in the comfort of their own space.
Factors to Consider
Personal Preference
Some individuals prefer the structure and face-to-face interaction of in-person therapy, while others find virtual therapy more convenient and comfortable.
Nature of the Issue
Certain mental health conditions may be better suited for in-person therapy, while others may benefit from virtual therapy. (For example, someone who experiences depressive symptoms, may benefit from creating time to get out of the house to an in-person session. Also, someone with anxiety, may find it overwhelming to leave the home and prioritize virtual care).
Accessibility
Virtual therapy can be a valuable option for those who have long commute times, limited availability, or have limited access to in-person care.
Technical Issues
Online sessions can be disrupted by technical problems, and not everyone has access to reliable a internet connection.
Is there an initial consultation?
It is important that you have and establish a connection with a therapist. Choosing someone to work with can be overwhelming. In order to make this decision easier for you, if you would like, we always provide a free 15-minute telephone consultation. Here, we will provide answers to any relevant questions that you may have or information you would like to share. Examples may include: what you would like to work on, fees and payment methods, training and background, treatment approach, and setting up a first appointment. In speaking with you, we hope to convey to you our warm, collaborative approach in this sensitive, difficult time, and to make you feel more comfortable speaking to someone with whom you may potentially invest time and effort.
What should you expect during the first appointment?
During your first appointment, it is important that we explore your concerns and why you have chosen to seek therapy at this time. We will develop insight into and mutual agreement about what it is you would like to work on and perhaps understand better. We will also complete a comprehensive intake, which involves discussing current goals you are looking to work on with us, and parts of your past as they relate to creating your positive and healthy future. By the end of the first appointment, we will identify and agree on realistic, clear goals that we can achieve together.
What should you expect in sessions after the first appointment?
Each session, after the first, will include clear tools and/ or solutions to work on in our time together, and that can be adapted outside of our appointments. While it is important for us to learn new strategies together, it will be even more significant to apply parts of your goals and treatment plan in your everyday life. We will also provide suggestions for new items to work on in between appointments, which can be lifestyles that will contribute to overall physical and mental well being. Honesty is key in this process, and we appreciate all feedback on what has and has not been helpful. This process is about you and what you take from when we meet.
Is there a certain amount of sessions or frequency in which I will need to come?
No, there is no set amount of sessions that you will need to come to therapy. There is also no rule for how often you need to attend. Some clients may benefit from a few sessions (short-term). Some may benefit from more sessions (long-term). Some clients like to come weekly, as they prefer the consistency and may have a number of things they are working on. Some find it beneficial to come monthly, to have more time to work on goals and strategies we have developed. For the process to be effective for you, this requires taking what you learn outside of the appointments we have, and applying it in your daily life. With respect to therapy and gaining personal insight, some or one time is better than none.
