Family counselling helps family members improve communication and resolve conflicts. This process varies according to each situation, and may include all family members, the ones that choose to participate, or the two that it affects the most. The overarching goal of family therapy is to teach you skills to strengthen connections and work through stressful times.
Family therapy can work to improve relationships that are suffering with your spouse, children, or other family members. Issues that are often addressed include: loss of connection in marital relations, financial issues, conflict between parents and children, or the impact of substance abuse or a mental illness on the entire family.
Your family may pursue family therapy along with other types of mental health treatment, especially if one or more members have a mental illness or addiction that requires individual therapy separate from the family counselling.
Your first session involves initial assessment of your well being and a thorough intake of your personal history and background. Subsequent therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length, and are unique to each individual treatment plan.
