Self-esteem Counselling
In self-esteem counselling, we will work to understand and be aware of your self-concept. To work on self-esteem issues, it is crucial to look at alternative ways of viewing yourself and to eliminate self-criticisms. In order to change your self-concept into a positive one, we will develop and/ or improve personal expectations. We will also work on self-acceptance, and in this process, you will learn to understand your strengths and limitations.
What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is an individual’s overall emotional evaluation of one’s own self-worth or self-image. It is a personal judgment of one’s perception and beliefs about oneself, contributing to a certain level of self-confidence. Self-esteem can apply to one aspect or trait (for example, confidence in ability to maintain relationships), or it can be more universal (overall sense of self).
What are self-esteem issues?
Self-esteem issues refer to a negative self-concept, involving negative thoughts and feelings about one’s self-worth. This may involve feelings of little pride, lots of shame and/or embarassment, and can negatively affect an individual’s psychological well-being and self-integrity. Someone with self-esteem issues usually sees faults, flaws, or failures in one or more areas of their life. Often, this can result from high and sometimes unrealistic set expectations. Below are some common thoughts and feeling associated with low self-esteem.
– Social withdrawal
– Anxiety and emotional suffering
– Lack of social skills and self-confidence
– Depression and/or bouts of sadness
– Less social conformity
– Inability to accept compliments
– Inability to be fair to yourself
– Accentuating the negative
– Exaggerated concern over what you imagine other people think
– Self neglect
– Reluctance to take on challenges
– Reluctance to put yourself first or anywhere
– Reluctance to trust your own opinion
– Expecting little of yourself
Your first session involves initial assessment of your well being and a thorough intake of your personal history and background. Subsequent therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length, and are unique to each individual treatment plan.
